Approximately a 40-50 hour course, the First Responder course follows the “National Standard Curriculum” designed by the USDOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Students receive a comprehensive textbook and will be trained to provide pre-hospital care in medical and trauma emergencies, above the level of basic first-aid but not as in-depth as EMT. First Responders are trained to recognize and provide basic treatment for a wide variety of situations including heart attacks, strokes, shock, poisoning, burns, heat- and cold-related and environmental emergencies. The program does not have any prerequisites and includes classes and skill acquisition in the following areas:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Situation and Patient Assessment
- Airway Maintenance and Patient Ventilation including Oxygen Therapy
- CPR/AED Use
- Injured Extremity Stabilization
- Emergency Childbirth
- Medical Personnel Assistance
- Triage and Patient Movement
Upon successful completion of the course practical and written exams students will receive a First Responder certification card valid for three years. In addition, students also receive Healthcare Provider CPR certification cards valid for two years.
This course does not certify the student for registration with State or local government organizations as a “First Responder”.
