Wilderness First Responder

Approximately a 60 – 80 hour comprehensive course designed for first responders who would handle emergency situations and hazards, where professional EMS help may be more than 30 minutes away.  Emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to properly assess and treat a variety of injuries, hazards and medical emergencies using the contents of a prepared first aid bag and improvised materials.  Students will cover a wide range of topics including:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Situation and Patient Assessment
  • Airway Maintenance and Patient Ventilation – O2 Administration
  • CPR/AED Use
  • Injured Extremity Stabilization
  • Patient Lifts and Carries
  • Spinal Immobilization
  • Medical Emergencies (optional – Emergency Childbirth)
  • Environmental Emergencies
  • Injury Emergencies
  • Situational Hazard Awareness and Prevention
  • Survival and Evacuation Techniques

There are no pre-requisites for this course.  All students receive a comprehensive student manual prior to the first day of class.  Upon successful completion of the course, including exam scenarios, students receive an ASHI Wilderness First Responder certification card valid for 3 years.
